Ottawa County, Michigan Inmate Search

Ottawa County inmate search is a process that allows individuals to find information about people currently housed in a local detention facility, such as the Ottawa County Jail. This search may be conducted online through the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division Inmate Lookup tool. The search results typically reveal inmates’ details, including their full names, booking information, custody status, and physical descriptions.

At the state level, the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) provides the Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS), which contains information about individuals who are or were housed in MDOC facilities. These include prisoners, parolees, and probationers under the jurisdiction or supervision of the MDOC within the last 3 three years. Similarly, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) provides an Inmate Locator tool that provides information about federal inmates incarcerated between 1982 and the present.

It is important to note that there are no MDOC or BOP facilities situated in Ottawa County. Furthermore, most municipal police departments in Ottawa County also do not maintain independent local jails. The Ottawa County Jail and the Ottawa County Juvenile Detention Center are the county’s major detention facilities.

Ottawa County Visitation Rules and Schedules

Ottawa County Jail permits three types of inmate visitation: in-person, professional, and video visits.

In-person visits

In-person visits must be scheduled 24 hours in advance and may be scheduled up to three (3) weeks beforehand. Prospective visitors can schedule an in-person visit by calling (616) 738-4650 during regular business hours. On their scheduled visitation date, visitors must arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled visitation time, or they risk forfeiting or reducing their visitation privileges.

Generally, inmates are allowed only one 45-minute face-to-face visit per week, and only two (2) adults and two (2) children may visit them at a time. All minors (children under 18) must be accompanied by an adult. All adult visitors must present a valid form of identification, such as a state-issued photo ID, a valid driver’s license, or a passport. Minors must also present a valid ID, such as a birth certificate, Social Security Card, or other acceptable photo ID. It is important to note that inmates who have not been placed into general housing areas are ineligible for visitations.

In-person professional visits

Only the following professionals are allowed to make these types of visits:

  • Attornies
  • Clergies
  • Law enforcement officers
  • Parole and probation officers
  • Psychologists and psychiatrists
  • Social workers.

These professionals must also schedule their visits 24 hours in advance by calling (616) 738-4650. However, an attorney of record may visit their client in person without advance scheduling. Notwithstanding, the Ottawa County Jail is closed to all visitors during specific hours (11:00 am to 1:00 pm, 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and 10:00 pm to 6:00 am). Professional visitors are also required to present a valid ID, specifically one related to their profession, during their visit. Those who cannot provide an appropriate ID must get prior approval from the jail administrator. It is worth noting that attorney visits are prioritized over all other professional visits.

Video visitation

Interested persons may schedule a video visitation online through the facility’s third-party service provider (SmartJailMail.com). Video visits are usually subject to a per-minute fee and may be scheduled in 15-minute increments. Prospective video visitors must create an account with the provider to use their video visitation service.

Generally, all visits (in-person, professional, and video visits) are subject to the facility’s visitation code of conduct rules, which include but are not limited to:

  • All visitors must be professionally dressed. Revealing and suggestive clothing is not permitted.
  • Visitors must properly conduct themselves. Disorderly, disruptive, or vulgar behavior is not to be condoned.
  • Personal properties, besides keys and identification, are not allowed in the visitation area
  • All types of weapons are not allowed in the visitation room.
  • Professional visitors are not allowed to give or receive gifts of money, property, or food from an inmate.
  • Bringing prescription drugs, alcoholic drinks, controlled substances, weapons, or items that an inmate may use to facilitate their escape is a felony
  • Professional visitors must sign in and out
  • Visitors who request contact visits are subject to searches before entry and when leaving the facility.
  • A visitor or inmate’s visitation privileges may be suspended or revoked if they violate applicable rules and regulations.

Mailing and Commissary Information

Ottawa County Jail contracted with a third-party electronic mail service provider (MailGuard) to provide an efficient way for inmates to receive letters and photos electronically. Interested persons may visit the provider’s third-party website (www.mailguardtracker.com) and create an account to use the electronic mailing services.

Interested persons may also send regular postal mail (such as postcards, greeting cards, and letters) to an inmate. The mail must have the inmate’s name and ID number clearly printed on the outside of the envelope or postcard and should be sent to:

Meanwhile, legal mail and court documents should be sent to:

Joe Sample #123456

c/o Ottawa County Adult Correctional Facility

12130 Fillmore Street

West Olive, MI 49460

New, unused, and soft-covered books ordered from approved internet vendors, including Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Hamilton Books, Schuler Books, and Walmart, may also be mailed to inmates. Additionally, Braille books must be obtained from approved Braille publications (such as American Printing House for the Blind). Note that books containing prohibited materials will be rejected. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Sexually explicit content
  • Contents that glorify, incite, or advocate for crimes or violence against children.
  • Materials that encourage ethnic, religious, or racial hatred.
  • Materials promote or show the use of narcotics, weapons, or other unlawful activities.
  • Contents that violate the inmate guidebook
  • Materials that may facilitate security breaches.

Once books are sent to inmates, they become the property of the facility and are stamped with "Property of the Ottawa County Jail". Subsequently, relevant inmates will be allowed to access them from the facility’s library book cart(s). Books should be sent to:
